What Is Respite Care?

Respite care is short-term, temporary relief for primary caregivers — family members who provide ongoing care for an elderly parent, a spouse with dementia, an adult child with a disability, or any loved one who requires consistent daily support at home.

When a family caregiver steps away — for a few hours, a full day, or several days per week — a professional respite caregiver from ABET Life steps in to provide the same level of attentive, personalised care.

Respite is not a luxury for Houston families — it is a lifeline. Family caregivers who do not take regular breaks are at significant risk of physical and emotional burnout, which directly affects the quality of care their loved one receives. Planned respite care is one of the most effective tools for sustaining long-term family caregiving.

ABET Life provides in-home respite care services across the Greater Houston area — bringing professional caregivers to your loved one's home so the family caregiver can take time away, attend to their own health and well-being, work, rest, or simply recharge.

Support for Houston Families

Who Needs Respite Care in Houston?

Respite care supports two people at the same time: the family caregiver who needs relief and the individual receiving care who continues to receive consistent support. Houston families commonly request respite care services in the following situations.

Family Caregivers Providing Round-the-Clock Care

Many Houston families provide continuous care for an elderly parent or spouse, including medication reminders, personal care, meal preparation, and safety supervision. This responsibility can become physically and emotionally exhausting. ABET Life's respite care program gives primary caregivers planned relief on a regular schedule, helping reduce caregiver burnout before it affects their health or ability to continue caring for their loved one.

Families Caring for a Senior with Dementia or Alzheimer's

Dementia caregiving requires constant supervision, patience, and flexibility, often over many years. ABET Life respite caregivers are trained to support seniors with dementia and can maintain the familiar routines and structured environment they depend on. Family caregivers can take a planned break knowing their loved one is receiving experienced and compassionate care at home.

Families Caring for Adults with Disabilities

Respite care is not limited to elderly care. Many Houston families care for an adult child, sibling, or spouse with a physical or intellectual disability, sometimes for decades. ABET Life provides respite care for adults with disabilities, giving family caregivers regular relief so they can protect their own well-being and sustain their caregiving role over the long term.

Families Navigating a Change in Care Needs

A fall, hospital stay, or new diagnosis can suddenly increase the level of care a senior needs at home. ABET Life can begin respite care during this transition, giving the family time to assess longer-term care options while their loved one continues to receive professional in-home support. The care schedule can be adjusted as the individual's needs change.

Care During Your Break

What ABET Life Respite Caregivers Provide

When ABET Life provides respite care in Houston, our caregivers deliver attentive, personalised support based on the care plan developed by a registered nurse. Care is adapted to the needs, routines, and preferences of the individual receiving support.

Personal Care and Daily Living Assistance

  • Bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting assistance based on the individual's care needs.

  • Mobility and transfer support for safer movement around the home.

  • Assistance with daily activities, including familiar morning and evening routines.

  • Meal preparation and feeding assistance based on dietary needs and personal preferences.

  • Light housekeeping to maintain a clean, comfortable, and safe home environment.

  • Medication reminders according to the established schedule and care plan.

  • Transportation assistance for medical appointments, errands, and essential outings.

Supervision and Safety Monitoring

For seniors or adults managing dementia, a disability, or a fall risk, time alone at home can create serious safety concerns. ABET Life respite caregivers provide active supervision, respond to needs, and observe for changes in condition that should be reported to the family or supervising registered nurse.

Companionship and Social Engagement

Respite care is more than coverage while a family member is away. A consistent caregiver provides companionship, conversation, and meaningful activities that support the individual's emotional well-being and quality of life during each visit.

Respite Care in Houston — Common Questions

  • Is respite care covered by Medicare in Texas?

Medicare covers respite care under hospice benefits — for individuals enrolled in Medicare hospice, short-term inpatient respite care is a covered benefit. Outside of hospice, Medicare does not cover standalone respite care. However, many ABET Life respite clients in Houston receive caregiving and skilled nursing services on a combined care plan — which may create Medicare coverage for the caregiver visits. Medicaid waiver programs in Texas also cover respite for qualifying individuals. Call (281) 431-1900 to discuss coverage options and eligibility for your situation.

  • How many hours of respite care can I request?

ABET Life does not impose a minimum or maximum on respite care hours. Many Houston families start with a few hours per week and increase as they see the benefit. Others request full-day coverage several days per week. The level of care and visit frequency is determined by the family caregiver's needs and the individual's care plan — not a fixed program structure. We provide as much or as little respite as the family requires.

  • Can ABET Life provide respite care for a parent with dementia?

Yes. ABET Life respite caregivers are trained in dementia care and provide respite for families caring for a parent or spouse with Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, or another form of cognitive decline. Our caregivers maintain the familiar routines and structured environment that dementia patients rely on — the individual receiving care experiences minimal disruption while the family caregiver takes their much-needed break.

  • Is respite care available on weekends and evenings in Houston?

Yes. ABET Life provides respite care services 7 days a week across Houston and surrounding areas, including evenings and weekends. Respite visit schedules are built around when the family caregiver needs relief — not standard office hours. For families who need 24-hour coverage or overnight respite, call (281) 431-1900 to discuss availability.

  • What is the difference between respite care and companion care?

Respite care is specifically designed to give a family caregiver a planned break — the primary purpose is relief for the caregiver, with the individual continuing to receive professional care in their absence. Companion care focuses on providing social engagement, companionship, and light assistance for the individual receiving care, regardless of whether a family caregiver is present. In practice, many ABET Life respite visits include companion care elements — the two services often work together. Many Houston families use both services on a coordinated care plan.
